BIS Raids Pressure Cooker Units Over ISI Mark Violations

New Delhi, Jun 4 (PTI) The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has conducted raids on two pressure cooker manufacturing units for violation of its law and misuse of ISI mark, and also seized large quantities of stocks.

The raids were conducted by the BIS' Vijayawada Branch Office on May 29, and legal actions have been initiated against these two manufacturing units, according to a statement on Thursday.

The branch office "conducted successful enforcement raids on 29 May 2026 against two manufacturing units engaged in the manufacture and storage of domestic pressure cookers and related components for misuse of the ISI Mark and violations of the BIS Act, 2016", it added.

The raids were conducted against Ghanshyam Aluminium and Ramdev Industries in Andhra Pradesh.

"During the inspections, it was observed that the units were engaged in the violation of the BIS Act 2016. Large quantities of finished pressure cookers and unfinished components were seized during the operations," BIS said.

At the premises of Ghanshyam Aluminium, Surampalli, Krishna district, BIS said around 9,519 pressure cooker components of various brands and capacities were found without a valid BIS licence and/or ISI Mark.

Significant quantities of finished pressure cookers and unfinished components were seized during the search operation.

Similarly, at the premises of Ramdev Industries, Kabela Industrial Area, Vijayawada, domestic pressure cookers of various capacities and related components bearing the ISI Mark with IS 2347 were found and seized.


The enforcement team seized approximately 478 finished pressure cookers, 418 cooker bodies, and 100 lids during the operation.

BIS has initiated legal proceedings against the concerned units for violations of the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016, the statement said.

Section 17 of the BIS Act, 2016, prohibits the manufacture, sale, storage, distribution, import, or exhibition for sale of goods bearing the Standard Mark without a valid BIS licence.

Section 29(3) of the BIS Act, 2016, provides for imprisonment up to two years or a fine not less than Rs 2 lakh and up to Rs 10 lakh, or both.

In certain cases, the fine may extend up to ten times the value of the goods involved.

The BIS Act prescribes stringent penalties for unauthorised use of BIS certification marks to safeguard consumer interests and ensure compliance with Indian Standards.

BIS Vijayawada officials said, "The ISI Mark is a symbol of quality, safety, and reliability. Any misuse of the Standard Mark undermines consumer confidence and poses potential safety risks."

The BIS remains committed to protecting consumers and will continue to take strict enforcement action against manufacturers and traders who violate the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016, they added.
