Delhi EV Policy 2026 Drives Surge in Electric Vehicle Enquiries

New Delhi, Jul 2 (PTI) Since the launch of 'Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2026', car dealers in the national capital said they have started receiving more queries on EVs.

The Delhi government on Wednesday notified the new policy which aims to accelerate electric vehicle adoption, improve air quality, and create a supportive ecosystem for electric mobility.

"We generally receive two to three enquiries a day, but that has increased to four to six. Most people are calling to understand the upcoming EV policy and how it could influence their purchase decision," a representative of YouWe VinFast, a car dealership at Bhikaji Cama Place in south Delhi said.

"We are expecting the number to increase further once the policy is notified, and we believe that will eventually translate into higher sales as well."

According to figures available on the E-wahan portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), 215 pure EVs were registered in the first two days of July this year.


The Delhi cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, approved the policy on June 30 after which LG Taranjit Singh Sandhu gave the final approval for the policy.

Under its EV policy, all electric cars with an ex-showroom price of Rs 30 lakh or less registered will get full exemption on road tax and registration fees in the national capital.

"We usually get 10-12 enquiries a day, but that has increased to 18-20. Most of the interest is in electric two-wheelers, with customers asking about the available models and their features. We expect inquiries to continue rising and are hopeful that this will soon be reflected in sales," Avinash of Vegam EV, a Komaki Electric dealership in east Delhi, said.

A representative from Ola Electric, said, "There is definitely an increase in enquiries over the past few days. Most people are curious about how electric vehicles work, how long they take to charge, battery life and what happens if the battery runs out while driving."

Under the new policy, only electric auto rickshaws will be registered in Delhi from January 1, 2027, while registration of new petrol and CNG two-wheelers will be phased out, with only electric two-wheelers to be registered from April 1, 2028.

Under the new policy, people buying e-two-wheelers will get a subsidy of Rs 30,000 in the first year, Rs 20,000 in the second year and Rs 10,000 in the third year. The policy will remain in force till March 31, 2030.
