Delhi Peak Power Demand Soars to Record High

Delhi hits season's highest peak power demand at 7776 MW as temperature reaches 45°C. Heatwave conditions forecast for next week.

New Delhi, May 19 (PTI) Delhi's peak power demand on Tuesday rose to this summer season's highest at 7,776 MW, as the mercury shot up to over 45 degrees Celsius.
According to the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) Delhi, the peak power demand was 7,776 MW at 3.30 pm. On Monday, the power demand first peaked to 7,542 MW at 4.05 pm and then soared further to 7,600 MW at 11.11 pm.
The city experienced its hottest day this summer, with maximum temperature soaring to 45.1 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature on Monday was recorded at 43.4 degrees Celsius, the second-highest this summer.
The weather department has forecast severe heatwave conditions in isolated parts of the national capital next week.
Delhi's peak power demand has seen a sharp rise in May compared to previous years, reflecting the impact of an intense and early summer, discom officials said.
Earlier this year, Delhi's peak power demand crossed the 7,000 MW mark for the first time ever in April, touching 7,078 MW at 3.30 pm on April 27. In comparison, the 7,000 MW level was reached only in May during 2024 and 2025, they said.
Delhi is expected to witness another significant rise in electricity demand this summer. According to SLDC projections, against the all-time high peak demand of 8,656 MW recorded in 2025, Delhi's peak power demand is expected to cross 9,000 MW this year.
In the summer of 2025, the highest peak demand was recorded at 8,442 MW on June 12.
The power discoms have made advanced preparations to tackle the soaring demand of electricity in the national capital.
A BSES spokesperson said its discoms -- BRPL and BYPL -- are geared up to ensure reliable power supply to more than 53 lakh consumers and nearly 2.25 crore residents across south, west, east and central Delhi.
Long-term purchase tie-ups, banking arrangements with other states and deployment of advanced technologies such as AI and ML-based demand forecasting have been employed to maintain uninterrupted supply, he said.
Around 2,670 MW of green power will play a key role in ensuring reliable electricity supply during the summer months in BSES areas. Solar power is expected to contribute about 840 MW, hydro around 572 MW and wind nearly 500 MW. Pumped Storage Plants (PSP) will provide around 312 MW, he said.
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) supplied the season's peak demand of 2,220 MW to date seamlessly across its network in north Delhi areas, its spokesperson said.
