Delhi Solar Expansion: 2 Lakh Households Powered

New Delhi, June 1 (PTI) Delhi's solar footprint has expanded to over 23,000 rooftop plants, generating 420 MW of power, enough to cover daily energy needs of around two lakh households and institutions, discom officials said on Monday.

The BSES discoms in the city - BRPL and BYPL - have energised more than 13,600 rooftop solar connections with around 260 MWp (Megawatt peak) load, a company spokesperson said.

Megawatt peak refers to power output from sources such as solar and wind energy depending on sunlight and wind speed, respectively.

The rooftop solar is helping BSES consumers to save nearly Rs 200 crore annually, said the company spokesperson.

Around 4,600 rooftop solar connections were energised in 2025-26, the highest ever in a year. These included more than 2,600 connections under the PM Surya Ghar scheme.

The total PM Surya Ghar scheme connection energised by the BSES discoms have gone upto over 4100 now, he stated.


The highest rooftop solar connections are in domestic (9,888), followed by commercial (2,184), educational (1,009), others (342) and industrial (207) categories, he said.

A major catalyst behind the sharp rise has been the subsidies under Central government's 'PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana', and Delhi Solar Policy, totalling Rs 1.08 lakh that has significantly improved affordability for residential consumers, officials said.

For a typical household, a 5 kW rooftop solar system can potentially deliver savings of Rs 3,500 or more per month, depending on consumption levels and tariff slab. Further, the surplus power is sold to the discoms at DERC-determined prices, officials said.

Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL), supplying power in North Delhi areas, has so far energised over 10,000 rooftop installations with 160 MWp load, said a discom spokesperson.

Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY), TPDDL has energised a record 4,375 rooftop solar plants with a total capacity of 20 MWp, he said.

Assuming each household is consuming power at 2 KW load, over 2 lakh households are fulfilling their daily electricity needs through solar energy, officials added.
