FSSAI Suspends Park Plaza Hotel License Over Food Safety

New Delhi, July 28 (PTI) Food safety watchdog FSSAI has suspended the licence of Delhi-based Park Plaza, which is part of Mahagun Hotels, for several violations, including use of degraded cooking oils and bad food quality.  

In a social media post on Tuesday, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said it has suspended "the licence of M/s Park Plaza based in Shahdara, Delhi, with immediate effect".

"Following a thorough inspection, multiple critical and gross non-compliances were observed," FSSAI said.  

Elaborating on the violations, FSSAI said it found that the hotel was using heavily deteriorated, dark black cooking oil for frying food, rendering it unfit for consumption.  

The regulator witnessed severe unhygienic conditions. These included active water leakage in walk-in chillers, water stagnation in broken floor tiles and heavy infestation of pests (flies & cockroaches).  

Related to food items, FSSAI said that there was "visible fungal growth on tomatoes and beetroot, and spoiled lemons stored for active use".  


There was complete absence of segregation between veg and non-veg food, ingredients, and utensils. It also found live earworms inside the food preparation zone, according to FSSAI.   

The company was in possession and storage of 63.60 Kg of expired food products intended for food preparation.   

In the last few months, FSSAI has cracked down on many energy drink and alcoholic beverage companies for misleading claims and labelling. It has also issued notices to many e-commerce platforms.  

These actions are based on consumer complaints, suo-motto cognizance and also regular enforcement activities of food safety officers.  

The regulator is posting these enforcement actions against the food business operators and e-commerce companies through social media platforms, including Instagram. 

FSSAI has given 15 days to the hotel to rectify mistakes and comply with all the rules; otherwise, the licence will be cancelled.
