HD KSOE Discusses Rs 38,000 Cr Thoothukudi Shipbuilding Cluster

Chennai, Jun 17 (PTI) A high-level delegation from HD KSOE, South Korea, led by its global business director Young Hoon Kwon, called on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat here on Wednesday and discussed the progress of the proposed Rs 38,000 crore mega greenfield shipbuilding cluster in Thoothukudi.

HD KSOE (HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering), one of the world's largest shipbuilders, has signed an MOU with the Tamil Nadu government for establishing a state-of-the-art shipbuilding cluster in Thoothukudi with a proposed investment of approximately Rs 38,000 crore and it is expected to generate around 15,000 direct employment opportunities, while creating a significant multiplier effect through ancillary industries and the local supply chain, an official release said.


For this project, National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park Tamil Nadu Limited (NSHIPTN) was formed between SIPCOT and VOC Port Authority (VOCPA) and it obtained the first in-principle approval for the establishment of a greenfield shipbuilding cluster from Directorate General of Shipping.

During the meeting, the chief minister reiterated Tamil Nadu's commitment to facilitate the timely establishment of this strategic project in Thoothukudi and assured the delegation of proactive institutional support at every stage of project implementation.

The delegation briefed the chief minister on the progress made and reaffirmed HD KSOE keen interest in grounding this project at the earliest, the release said.
