HP Farmers: Insure Maize & Paddy Crops by July 31 Deadline

Hamirpur (HP), Jul 3 (PTI) Himachal Pradesh government has urged the state's farmers to get their kharif crops of maize and paddy insured before July 31 to avail crop insurance benefits for losses due to natural disasters.

Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme, launched to compensate for crop losses due to natural disasters such as drought, floods, water logging, and hailstorms, can also be availed during the current kharif season and maize and paddy crops are being insured under this scheme.

Deputy Director of the Agriculture Department D D Sharma on Friday said that the deadline for insuring these crops is July 31.

He added that for Hamirpur district, all tehsils and sub-tehsils have been notified for maize crop insurance while three tehsils -- Hamirpur, Nadaun, and Bhoranj, have been notified for paddy crop insurance.


He said that a premium of Rs 48 will be required for crops grown on one canal of land. Farmers can insure their crops by submitting their photo identity card, Aadhaar card and land documents through the insurance company at the nearest Lok Mitra Kendra, banks, or online.

All indebted farmers (who have taken a loan from a bank or other financial institution) will be automatically insured by the financial institutions.

If any indebted farmer does not wish to avail of this scheme, they can submit a declaration to the relevant bank branch.

The premium for maize and paddy crop insurance has been fixed at Rs 1,200 per hectare or Rs 48 per canal. The insured amount will be Rs 60,000 per hectare, Sharma informed.
