India prioritizes reliable raw material supply chains for its 300 MT steel capacity goal by 2030. mjunction''s ecosystem boosts domestic scrap availability.

New Delhi, Jul 8 (PTI) Securing reliable, high-grade raw material supply chains has become an urgent industrial priority to meet steel capacity goals, an industry executive said on Wednesday.
The government has set an ambitious goal of scaling up India's overall installed steel-making capacity to 300 million tonnes (MT) by 2030.
"As India pursues its roadmap to expand steel manufacturing capacity to 300 million tonnes by 2030, securing reliable, high-grade raw material supply chains has become an urgent industrial priority," Vinaya Varma, Managing Director of mjunction, said in a press conference here.
He noted that scrap is one of the most sustainable raw materials for steel making, but India continues to remain a scrap-deficit nation.
India imported around 7-8 million tonnes of ferrous scrap in FY26 to bridge the gap between domestic demand and availability, Varma said.
However, ferrous scrap imports declined by around 20 per cent year-on-year, driven by an increase in domestic scrap availability from vehicle recycling, infrastructure dismantling, and industrial manufacturing, he said.
Against this backdrop, mjunction services limited has created a digitally connected circular ecosystem that integrates steel producers, recyclers, Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities (RVSFs), processors, manufacturers, logistics partners and consumers into a transparent and efficient steel scrap value chain.
In FY26 alone, mjunction's total volume of scrap transactions on its platforms stood at 2.5 million tonnes, Varma said.
A joint venture of Tata Steel and Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), mjunction is India's largest B2B e-commerce company.
