Irdai grants a license to Prudential HCL Health Insurance, a UK-HCL joint venture, to operate standalone health insurance in India, increasing insurers to eight.

New Delhi, Jul 1 (PTI) Insurance regulator Irdai on Wednesday granted a licence to Prudential HCL Health Insurance Ltd, allowing it to carry on standalone health insurance business in the country.

The regulator, in its 136th board meeting held on June 29, 2026, granted Certificate of Registration to Prudential HCL Health Insurance Ltd to carry on health insurance business in India, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) said in a statement.

Prudential HCL Health Insurance Ltd is a 70:30 joint venture between the Prudential Group of the UK and the HCL Group.


With this registration, the number of standalone health insurers operating in India has increased to eight.

This is the third registration granted by Irdai during the calendar year 2026.

The joint venture was announced in March last year. The joint venture aims to address the growing healthcare needs of the Indian consumer and contribute to the government's vision of 'Insurance for All by 2047'.
