Karnataka Leads India with 41% Software Export Share

Bengaluru, Jul 17 (PTI) Karnataka ranks first in the country, contributing a massive 41 per cent of India's total software exports and the state government remains firmly committed to boosting exports.

The figures were shared at the State Level Export Promotion Committee (SLEPC) meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh here and attended by senior state and central government officials, industry representatives and export promotion councils.

According to an official statement, Karnataka ranks first in the country by contributing 41 per cent share to India's total software exports. Additionally, the state has maintained its top position by securing a 24 per cent share in the nation's overall export sector.

In terms of merchandise exports, the state holds the fourth position with a 7.78 per cent share, following Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, it said.

Darpan Jain, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, who also attended the meeting shared key insights regarding the massive support and benefits being provided to states by the central government through the 'Export Promotion Mission' (EPM), aligned with the identified export potential in various sectors.


According to him, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Government of India, has launched a time-bound campaign to implement measures under the 'District as Export Hub' (DEH) initiative, covering 120 priority districts across the country.

In the first phase of this initiative, five key districts of Karnataka have been selected -- Bengaluru Urban, Belagavi, Hassan, Kolar, and Dakshina Kannada.

The Additional Secretary explained that sectors like textiles, apparel, silk, leather goods, agriculture, and processed foods have immense export potential in Karnataka, particularly in districts outside of Bengaluru.

Citing successful global models like Vietnam, he mentioned that prominent anchor companies and global giants like Samsung are keen to expand their investments and export partnerships across various districts of the state.

Officials noted that the key benefits offered under the Export Promotion Mission (EPM), include financial support, logistics assistance, and freight subsidy.

The Chief Secretary also directed the Visvesvaraya Trade Promotion Centre (VTPC), the state's nodal agency for the District as Export Hub initiative, to focus on capacity building, practical workshops and leveraging free trade agreements.
