Kerala LPG Supply: Brittas Seeks Minister Intervention
New Delhi, Mar 11 (PTI) Expressing concern over emerging issues regarding the supply and distribution of LPG cylinders in Kerala, CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas on Wednesday urged Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to intervene and ensure there is no shortage of cooking gas.

In a letter to the minister, he said that serious concerns are emerging in Kerala regarding the supply and distribution of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), particularly in the context of the disruptions in petroleum imports caused by the ongoing conflict situation in West Asia.

The Left leader said the use of LPG in Kerala was almost universal, which creates a unique situation and a shortage would pose a "potential threat" to the functioning of several sectors.

"It would be particularly helpful if appropriate relaxations or special arrangements for Kerala could be considered with respect to the restrictions currently affecting commercial LPG refilling, so that the functioning of essential services, food establishments, and institutional facilities in the state remains uninterrupted," Brittas said.

Brittas said even temporary disruptions in supply chains can have far-reaching consequences for ordinary households and public life.

"Kerala occupies a uniquely sensitive position in this regard. The state has an exceptionally high dependence on LPG as the primary cooking fuel across households. Unlike many other regions where alternative fuels continue to play a role, in Kerala, LPG usage has become nearly universal," he said.

He said the concerns have also been "formally communicated" by Kerala minister G R Anil to the Minister and urged Puri to examine the matter on priority.
