MMRDA: Weekly Public Transport Day Launched in BKC

Mumbai, Jun 6 (PTI) The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has launched a 'Weekly Public Transport Day' in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), urging around two lakh professionals in the city's premier business district to use public transport every Friday.

In a release issued on Saturday, MMRDA said the initiative launched in collaboration with WRI India on World Environment Day aims to reduce traffic congestion, curb pollution and promote sustainable mobility in the commercial hub.

As per the release, the announcement was made at a high-level roundtable attended by senior government officials, transport agencies, corporate representatives and mobility experts.

Stakeholders resolved to encourage employees and organisations in BKC to commute through public or shared transport every Friday, it added.


"According to a mobility study presented at the meeting, 52 per cent of commuters travelling to BKC still depend on private vehicles, taxis and autorickshaws, while only 25 per cent use public transport. The study also found that over 54 per cent of commuters spend more than two hours travelling daily," the release highlighted.

MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee said even a modest shift towards public transport and shared mobility could significantly ease congestion, improve travel efficiency and reduce emissions in BKC.

"With nearly two lakh professionals commuting to BKC every day, encouraging public transport use even once a week can have a meaningful impact on mobility and the environment," Mukherjee said.

The release said the initiative assumes significance as metro connectivity in BKC expands, with Metro Line 3 already operational and upcoming Metro Lines 2B and 4 expected to bring most parts of the business district within a kilometre of a metro station.

Representatives of transport agencies, Mumbai Traffic Police, leading BKC-based companies and mobility experts participated in the roundtable and pledged support for sustainable commuting practices, the release said.
