Maharashtra CM Fadnavis directs officials to expedite power infrastructure projects in Nagpur & Amravati districts, citing rising demand. Rs 955 crore needed for upgrades.
Mumbai, Jul 7 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday asked authorities to expedite execution of approved power projects in Nagpur and Amravati districts as demand for electricity is rising, driven by increased industrial, commercial activity and real estate expansion.
Fadnavis, presiding over a meeting, directed officials to expedite work on approved power infrastructure projects (encompassing electricity generation, transmission, and distribution) in these districts in the Vidarbha region, said a release from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
He noted that Rs 713 crore will be required for Nagpur district and Rs 242 crore for Amravati to fulfil power sector needs, and budgetary provisions should be made accordingly.
The CM instructed officials to undertake immediate planning for future power demand by considering the projected population in 2035 and prepare a comprehensive energy infrastructure development plan for both districts.
Fadnavis, who holds the energy portfolio, noted power demand in Nagpur district, his home turf, is increasing due to rising investments in various infrastructure projects.
Works approved under the current funding for the power sector in Nagpur and Amravati districts should be completed promptly, he told officials.
He pointed out many new projects are expected in the near future, for which the energy department must take concrete steps to ensure prompt implementation.
The Chief Minister stressed the need for strong measures to prevent damage to underground cables caused by various agencies.
He suggested the use of secure cable ducts to avoid wiring damage in power distribution due to new projects in the two districts.
Priority should be given to initiatives like solar agricultural pump scheme (on-demand basis), transformer capacity enhancement, setting up of new power plants and sub-stations, the CM added.
